Program Notes

Street was conceived as a soundtrack to an excerpt from “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces,” a film by William H. Whyte. As a social study and documentary, it is an unlikely source of musical inspiration, but the footage and the often humorous yet informative commentary provide a clear narrative. In the first half of the particular segment that inspired this soundtrack, Whyte discusses Paley Park (Manhattan), a public space that interacts successfully with the street. In the second half, several unsuccessful examples (spaces that reject the street) are examined. Street was commissioned by Musiqa of Houston.
