Program Notes
Since the Baroque era, the term “scherzo” has been used to describe various works or movements of works which vary widely in terms of form, tempo, and character. Scherzo for orchestra is an amalgam of the many musical features this sometimes ambiguous term has come to represent: dance, lyricism, whimsy, drama, rhythmic drive, and even humor, as the original Italian meaning of the word suggests.
