Also in May, NANOWorks Opera Company of Cincinnati will give repeat performances of Layover at their next production of short operas, Game of Hearts.


March 2013


Layover was selected for performance at the New Fangled Festival of Opera presented by the New Orleans-based group New Fangled Opera.  The festival will take place June 7-8.


February 2013


Chuchichäschtli was selected for performance at the 35th Foro Internacional de Música Nueva in Mexico City this summer.  The Mexican group Duplum Dúo (Fernando Domínguez and Iván Manzanilla) will perform the work.

Scherzo for orchestra was awarded Special Distinction in the 33rd annual ASCAP Foundation Rudolf Nissim Prize.  Read the press release here.


December 2012


Duet for bassoon and cello was selected for performance at the Society of Composers, Inc. 2013 National Conference held at The Ohio State University School of Music.  It will be featured among dozens of works by other American composers.


Volti’s December concert set, which included Dipukų Rauda, got rave reviews from StarkInsider (read review), Examiner.com (read review), and the San Francisco Classical Voice (read review).


November 2012


Charles was one of six composers selected to participate in the Intimacy of Creativity 2013 partnership directed by composer Bright Sheng.  He will spend two weeks in Hong Kong workshopping Round and Round, and will perform a revised version of the work with invited artists on the final concert on May 5, 2013.


June 2012


In early December, Dipukų Rauda will be performed three times in the San Francisco area by the award-winning and new-music-championing chamber choir Volti.


May 2012


Round and Round won 2nd Place in the Lake George Music Festival Composition Competition.  The work will be performed at the festival in August 2012.


Charles will spend two weeks at the highSCORE Festival in Pavia, Italy this summer.


April 2012


Charles has been commissioned by Musiqa to compose a new work for clarinet and percussion to be premiered  at Musiqa’s Alternate Tracks concert on May 17 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

The Baltimore/DC-based saxophone and harp duo Pictures on Silence released its debut album, Voyage, which includes a recording of Rhapsody for soprano saxophone (or birbynė) and harp.  You can order the album here.


Por la Fuerza las Tierras was named winner of the 2012 Frame Dance Productions Composition Competition.  The piece will be choreographed for the dance company’s CONTEXT performance in May 2012.


December 2011


Dipukų Rauda was one of the winning works of Boston Metro Opera’s Composers’ Competition.  The work will be performed at BMO’s Contemporary AmericanaFestival in May 2012.


November 2011


Dipukų Rauda was selected for performance at the ISCM World Music Days 2012.  The 2012 festival will be held in Belgium and the Aquarius Chamber Choir will sing the work in early November 2012.


September 2011


Round and Round for violin, cello, and piano four hands was awarded Honorable Mention in the American Modern Ensemble’s Composition Competition.


Charles was named Artist-in-Residence at the Foundation for Modern Music (Houston) for its 2011-2012 concert season.


August 2011


Trio for violin, cello, and piano was chosen by the Boston New Music Initiative for performance in the spring of 2012.


July 2011


Scherzo for orchestra was awarded the 2011 Northridge Composition Prize, held by California State University at Northridge.  The work will receive its first performance in Spring 2012 by the CSUN Symphony at CSUN’s brand new and very impressive Valley Performing Arts Center.


June 2011


Fantasy for solo cello was awarded 4th place in the Saint Petersburg Contemporary Music Center’s Composition Competition.


Trio for violin, cello, and piano was chosen by the Chattanooga-based new music collective New Dischord in its first call for scores.


May 2011


Fantasy for solo cello was awarded 2nd place in the Robert Avalon International Competition for Composers hosted by the Foundation for Modern Music.
